Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
