Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
