Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
